CONVINCING START-UP PROJECTS

SITE LOCATION

Located on the maritime coast of Guinea, Boké covers an area of 334 km². It is located in the northwestern part of Guinea called Maritime Guinea. The climate is of the humid tropical type, with an average annual rainfall reaching 2,675 mm, while the number of rainy days is around 120 days a year.

Close to Guinea-Bissau, an asphalt road makes it possible to quickly cover the distance of 250 kilometers which separates it from Conakry, the capital of Guinea. At the regional level, a paved road allows you to reach Kamsar in 50 km, and tracks lead to Sangarédi or Gaoual. Boké is also crossed by the regional rail network which connects Sangarédi to Kamsar. The Boké station allows you to take advantage of the 135 km of railway line operated by the Compagnie de Bauxite de Guinée (CBG). Boké has an airport.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION

Most of the economic activities practiced by this population revolve around mining and agriculture. Mining explains the dynamism in trade and service activities. The Boké region has been experiencing an over-concentration of foreign direct investment in the extractive industry for more than a decade. This has allowed the development of commercial infrastructures to connect with the largest consumer markets in the world: North America, Europe, China, UAE.A geographical area of 20 km², i.e. 2,000 hectares, has been selected there to develop a SEZ - modern economic and urban center - capable of generating more than 100,000 jobs and housing around 200,000 inhabitants. The starting area (1st phase) will be limited to 300 hectares with an objective of approximately 30,000 jobs and 45,000 inhabitants. The population is still mainly occupied with agriculture: more than 80% of the people work “in the fields”. The main crops are rice, maize, peanuts and fonio. The Boké market continues to supply the rest of the country with groundnuts. Mahogany cultivation, which is economically very profitable, is also progressing. However, Boké continues to source certain products from outside.

SECTORAL PRIORITIES

In the short and medium term, the promotion of rather light branches of activity such as storage with a view to sub-regional distribution, assembly, and packaging, will be favored at the start for the initiation of the project. These are mainly industries supplying hydrocarbons, mining and agro-industrial equipment, and mass consumer goods: textiles, spare parts, IT, household appliances, etc. They are characterized by reduced time to market, given their mobility - constantly in search of comparative advantage -, and high employment intensity.
